The Headway Theme – A New Version Released

The newest beta version of Headway 1.7 has been released to the lucky ones holding a developers license, and geeks, web designers and WordPress newbies around the world are clapping their hands with glee and squealing with joy like kids at Christmas.

This next version is the bomb, guys.

New Features include:

  • Quick Start Wizard, which prompts you to choose how many columns (COLUMNS! YES!), upload an image, and even reads your image to suggest a color palette to get started.
  • Exporting leaf templates, creating your own Styles and managing/editing styles from the Visual Editor
  • Overhaul of the Content Leaf for more stability
  • Ability to “center” leafs
  • Easily manage global padding and margins on leafs
  • Search bar integrated into navigation automatically
  • RSS link in header if you want it there
  • “Top” and “Bottom” leaf areas

… and more. I can’t list all the options.

The Headway team is also working on a complete overhaul of the documentation; it’s traditionally been a weak point with this theme, but that’s all going to change. Myself, the developer and a couple of other power users will be writing up documentation, tutorials, recording videos and more in time for the official public launch of the stable version. See my post over at Headway Beginner to leave your recommendations, questions or comments about the newest version!

Headway Themes vs. Thesis – Which Theme is Right for You?

Until recently, the only real competitor in the theme framework space was the Thesis Theme by DIY Themes, until Clay Griffiths and his father, Grant Griffiths, came up with the idea of the Headway Theme by G2 Web Media. I honestly and truly believe that you can achieve anything with Headway. While you could also achieve nearly anything in Thesis, I think you’ll have to do a lot more work to get it there.

Adding a Horizontal or Inline Page Listing in WordPress

A recent client (NFMChamber.org*) had a need to show a page listing in the footer of their site. This isn’t an unusual need, and it’s simple enough to do with standard HTML & text links. The challenge for this particular client is that they needed the listing to be dynamic; the users and administrators are not very technology-savvy and couldn’t tell their HTML from their elbow.

Don’t Lose A Single Link! Permalink Redirects Save the Day

It took me a while to figure out how to get the redirects to work so that the old blog posts (there were hundreds) would redirect to the new blog posts.  Just adding a redirect to redirect any URLs with /blog didn’t work, as the new blog page was ALSO examplesite.com/blog, but all the posts were examplesite.com/month/day/postname.

Create a Basic WordPress Page Template without Sidebars

Your Wordpress theme may already include multiple page templates (one for the typical page – the default, one for post archives and one for post categories, for example). You have the option to add as many page templates as you can think up, however. This gives you more flexibility in your theme and layout, which means your blog can be more than just a blog – you can create a business site, portfolio or more and really use Wordpress as the CMS it is designed to be.
